What We Have to Look Forward to in Android Oreo

Android Oreo is the new, long-awaited iteration of the popular phone operating system, but if you’re not entirely familiar with the Android family of devices or operating systems then you might be a bit confused. What is it that Oreo offers over any of the other operating systems on the market? We’re going to take a quick look at the features which you will need to familiarize yourself with if you plan to be a success in the Android coding world. As always, it’s going to improve significantly in the future, but being familiar with the current Android features will go a long way toward helping you to get a great education. Let’s take a look at some of the newest features.

Picture-in-Picture: It’s Everywhere

Android codingIf you’ve used previous versions of Android then you already know that the YouTube app has been able to give you the picture in picture feature for a while. By this we mean it’s been able to shrink videos into a smaller window, allowing you to continue watching while performing other tasks. To be fair, Facebook’s calling feature could do the exact same thing. In Android Oreo, it can be done with any app; all you need to do is start a video and press the home button.

Notification Badges are Now on the Home Screen

Most applications on Android have already had notification badges, but it gets even better in Oreo. You can easily turn this option on and off with a toggle switch in settings, but you should keep in mind that the notification badges need to be enabled by the developers themselves, so not every single application is going to have them. Still, it’s a great innovation for Android and one that almost all users are going to want to take advantage of.

Notification Priorities

With Android Oreo, you now have the option to manage notification priorities using channels. You can prioritize the ones that you want to see, and the ones that you don’t. Additionally, you can see which ones that you want to see first. Take group notifications for example – some of your notifications might be able to buzz and light up the phone, and others would simply give you a silent alert. It all depends on what you want it to do and how much information you want to receive each day.

Heightened Security

Android Oreo is currently being promoted with an application called Google Play Protect which increases security, allowing you to scan incoming apps for malware, which is very helpful if you have unauthorized apps approved in your settings.

Increased Battery Life

Oreo has a new set of rules on what apps can and cannot do in the background, which will save battery life and will, of course, lead to better application design.
